So I just got back from a lovely day at the OC Zoo. I got there at 7:30 am to prepare diets for two black bears (who are actually brown), a beaver, a porcupine, a coati, three raccoons, an island fox and a crow, then I had to clean the bear's overnight pens.  Yay for huge bear turds. So then I took my break and watched the enrichment program for the mountain lions, Simba and Amanda.  Basically, the keeper stuck a rat (dead) in a cardboard box and taped it shut pretty well. He let Amanda into the habitat, but she just kept pacing around the enclosure and wouldn't go near the box -- too many noisy people too close. So he let Simba out too. Simba IMMEDIATELY started tearing into the box, but as soon as he got it open, Amanda darted in and stole the rat =( poor Simba. Simba decided he didn't want the rat anyway, and shredded the box instead.

I ended up eating my entire chicken caesar salad (I thought I would eat less than half, shows how much I know) for lunch, then I headed over to the barnyard petting zoo area for my first time helping out with the goats. OMFG THEY ARE ALL SO CUTE! We have four African Pygmy goats and five Nigerian Dwarf goats. WANT. I have no idea why, but I've always loved goats. Mo is probably my favorite; he's a little cream-colored Nigerian dwarf who just loooves attention. Sandy is super cute because she's so tiny (she's a bit of a runt), her brothers Patrick and Diego are great and her sister Dora is a wanna-ba escape artist (all Nigerian dwarfs but unrelated to Mo). The pygmies are wonderful, too: Star is standoffish but stares at me dolefully like she really wants attention, Butter and his sister Toffee head-butt the others a lot, and Unforgettable just runs around a lot. Gah I love them all. They're so cute when they get riled up and start bleating; if one goes off it sets all the others off too. I get to go back to the zoo on Tuesday to spend time with them. =D Pictures will come later.

After a long day at the zoo (7:30 am to 2 pm), I got back home and discovered that IT'S 83 DEGREES in my apartment. WTF. Roommate #2 aparently came home after I left for the zoo, turned on the heater, and left for work. That means the heater was on for five hours, if not longer. GAH! Seriously, she can have the electric bill all to herself if that's the way she wants it.
