My laptop died. Apparently I dropped it one too many times, so it no longer charges or runs on AC power. Other than that, it works fine. Or it would, if I could turn it on.

Dan's laptop is completely out of order. The motherboard died. The only way to fix it is to send it in and spend three to five hundred dollars on a replacement motherboard plus any other repairs needed. That's not happening. So, Dan is scavenging parts off his laptop. He converted the old laptop harddrive into an external harddrive by buying a little case for about two bucks. Voila. He's hoping to turn the LCD screen into a projector? He's also thinking about turning the DVD player into an external DVD player for use with a netbook, or something.

My new computer that I built from parts is also on the fritz. It blue screened on me whenever I had too many tabs open on a web browser or if I was watching a movie or online show. Dan had a whole bunch of theories about what might be wrong with it. The big one was that it might be a cooling problem. He installed a program to monitor the internal temperature and to make it stay lower than it was. We removed the case cover and aimed a fan at it for awhile. This sort of worked, but it wasn't entirely successful. Then one night we were watching a Leverage episode through Netflix, and the computer crashed. Again. I told Dan that I knew before it happened that it was going to go out. About three seconds before it bluescreened, I saw the screen flash a bit and heard a clicking type noise. I had enough time to think, "Here we go again" before it died. So, Dan downloaded another program and burned it to a blank DVD and used it to test for memory errors. On test five, it had six errors. I got bad RAM. Fortunately, the RAM I got was from a good company. Dan wrote to them explaining what was wrong and how he knew, and they said to go ahead and return it. I yanked out the RAM on Thursday morning and sent it in. Now I'm waiting for them to test it and either return the faulty RAM or give me a replacement. I got an email yesterday stating that they "are currently experiencing delays with warranty replacement shipments, please allow for an additional 5 business days for processing." That means that I'll probably be without my computer until sometime next week instead of getting it up and running within the next few days. Fine times.

Three computers went out-of-order within just a few weeks. The only one left is Dan's desktop. And the Wii, to a (very) limited extent.

Edit: Dan got my laptop to charge! Or not. It's being really tempermental. He propped the adapter cable up on a post-it note pad. I used the same trick until it went almost completely dead. Argh stupid thing. I just want it to survive through this weekend, then I should have my desktop back. Also, I have tons of pictures and music and other documents that I NEED to get off that darn thing. My LIFE is on there, damnit!

Oh, computer woes. Here's one:

I have a desktop at home, it's supposed to be the family computer but I use to to store all my photography stuff and some art work. Then one day this summer my brother and his friend decided they were going to mess with the hard drive of his xobx 360...and in order to know what they were doing they took out the hard drive of the desktop first and messed with it for awhile. My mum's friend works in computer repairs, so she took it to him to see if he could salvage anything off the memory. Four months later, it has yet to return.

Oh no, really? That's terrible news! Maybe your mom's friend just forgot about it? I really, really hope you get all those pictures back!!

BTW, your brother's logic is fail. It's called the internet, people!

Supposedly, she's picking it up this weekend. And I am told that all of the memory was able to be saved *crosses fingers* So we'll see. I just found out about this today lol.

Yes it was an epic fail indeed.
"Why on earth did you open up the computer?"
"Well we wanted to see where all the wires are supposed to go, and they run off the same thing. We stuffed it right back in there." >0

*whew* That's good to hear! I'll keep my fingers crossed as well.

...why couldn't they just do that with the xbox in the first place?

Thanks very much!

Apparently, they didn't want to take the chance of messing up the xbox. *eyeroll*

So they'd rather mess up a computer that's likely worth more than the xbox? LAME.

Yes, that was apparently the logic they used. Very lame indeed. They killed the poor compy with a screwdriver!

What, exactly, did they do to it? You just made it sound like they stabbed it with a screwdriver!

They opened up the back and poked around on the inside with screwdriver for a bit. Took out the hard drive, that sort of thing. Basically, it was a stabbing.
