Did you realize I've been unemployed for nearly 4 1/2 months?? Yeah, I didn't either until I counted. Damn.
That said, I JUST GOT A JOB!!!!!!
I got a call from DoggyTown USA* last Wednesday wondering if I was still looking for a job. What, DoggyTown? Why hello there! I only applied for that job three months ago! H'ok. So I got an interview scheduled for Friday at 10am. Friday came around, and I got up, got dressed in my schnazzy clothes, and left with time to spare. I walked in about five minutes early and met Denise, the owner. The manager Laura took me back to the consultation room right away. Laura asked me a ton of questions, including what makes a good workplace or a bad boss, what my ideal job was, and whether I would continue working if I won the lottery? Why yes, yes I would -- I would just make sure it was my dream job, not some crappy retail position. She left for a bit, then came back to ask when I was available the following week for a second "working" interview. We settled on Wednesday (Big Bang was Tuesday!), then she gave me a tour of the place. I met some of the dogs and said hi and let them sniff/lick me, then I headed back home.
*Doggytown is a cage-free boarding facility for dogs. They take dogs for the day and let them roam and play with other dogs in a safe environment. They also take dogs overnight if their parents are out of town on vacation or whatever. The dogs are only kenneled during mealtimes, and select dogs are kenneled at night upon owner request, otherwise they're free within the runs.
We had a minor problem: Dan had to go to work at 1pm, but I was going to be in my paid working interview from 10 to 3. So while I got ready on Wednesday morning, Dan went out to check my bike and stick the bike rack on the car. He dropped me off at the kennel with my bike, which I locked up at the conveniently located bike shop next door, then I headed in to work and hopefully to impress them. Laura started by giving me a more in-depth tour by explaining what went on where and how to perform each duty. After that, we headed into the small dog enclosure to literally start small. She told me how to act to make the dogs respect me, how to discipline them in certain situations so they don't get out of hand. After a few minutes there, we moved to the medium dog kennel. Same thing, only the dogs were bigger and less yippy. After a few hours there, Laura shifted me to the large dog run. This was a bit tougher. I was surrounded by two golden retrievers, to german shepherds, a dalmation, a doberman, a great big black dog, a pitbull mix, a husky, and WOLF HYBRID. How absolutely awesome is that? I got to hang out with a wolf. Wow. So, it was a bit tougher than the other two areas because the dogs were... spunkier. More mischievious. One dog -- we think it was the younger golden, Nick -- figured out how to open the gates. Another, a skinny yellow lab, liked to escape whenever given the slightest opportunity. And Nesta, the big black dog whose breed I am unfamiliar with, decided to test me. She started out great, but an hour after I entered the area, she decided to stop playing nice. She started barking in my face and growling at me. Now, I couldn't put up with it. I was by no means intimidated -- she was just testing me, she wasn't actually aggressing -- I just had to intimidate and discipline her so she'll know who's who.
Before I knew it, it was 3pm and time for me to go home. I was told to expect a call within the next few weeks, then Laura handed me an envelope and off I went to ride my bike nearly 4 miles home. (Hey, it beat Dan having to ride a bike 18 miles each way in the cold at night.) The next day, Thursday, I got a call. It was DoggyTown. They were wondering if I actually had transportation other than my bike. I explained that yes I did, and that Dan just needed it that day, so we compromised. Okay. Hang up. I went back to what I was doing. Today, Friday, I was poking around online when Dan called to say he was heading home (he likes to talk during the dark walk to the car). Literally seconds after I got off the phone with him, the phone rang again. I thought it was Dan again, maybe he forgot to ask me something? No, caller ID said it was 714 number. Hmm. I answered, and it was DoggyTown! They asked if I was still interested in the job and extended me a job offer! Laura will be calling on Monday to set up my schedule. I could potentially be working as soon as Tuesday! (Though, realistically, I expect to start work in about a week.)
I don't know how many hours I'll get or what my schedule will look like, but I have a job! I'm just excited to get out of the house and be around people again, and dogs!
Oh, and on top of that great news? I got a surprise!houseguest! OHAITHAR SETH! Dan okayed Seth's visit this weekend AND DIDN'T TELL ME ABOUT IT. What an awesome surprise =) I kinda freaked out when Seth called me for directions and he was less than an hour away. Immediate reaction? MUST CLEAN HOUSE. I frantically did the dishes and straightened up while I made Dan vacuum, then Seth was here! I luff Seth and am really happy to have him here, I just get embarassed and ashamed if my house is a mess. Seth is awesomeness. Yay! (Seth is Dan's best friend since middle school; I've adored Seth since I met him through Dan four years ago. He's just a great guy.) Anyhow, YAY!!!!
